有茎、几无茎或无茎多年生少一年生草本，通常被稠密的棉毛，极少无毛或几无毛。茎如发育，则为棍棒状或顶端膨大，如茎不发育，则植株为莲座状。叶不分裂，边缘全缘或羽状分裂。头状花序多数，密集于茎端并排成一个扁平的平面或生于莲座状叶丛中，通常为密被棉毛的苞叶所包围或半包围，极少单生。瘦果通常无毛，极少被短柔毛。冠毛白色或褐色，2层，外层短，糙毛状，易脱落，内层长，羽毛状，或冠毛1层，羽毛状。花托有托片或无托片。
本亚属有26种，主要分布我国青藏高原及毗邻省区。
